Willaim Haines, a publisher, father of Mrs. Marion Smith, who was reported rescued from the doomed vessel, was prostrated with grief when he heard the first news of the sinking of the vessel. The great joy of suddenly hearing that his daughter was safe was too much for Mr. Haines, who is an elderly man. He could hardly speak his thanks for the joyous news.
"I am too happy to say anything, except that I am so glad to hear that my dear daughter is safe. My nerves are all unstrung from the ordeal of waiting for favorable news, and I cannot talk any more about it now," said Mr. Haines, who had left his apartments in the Arcola hotel to seek solace in the home of his friend and business associate, George K. Mathewson, of 4131 Prairie avenue.
[This appears to be a misidentification of the Miss Marion Smith that was on the Titanic.]
