---
WASHINGTON, June 8---An effort was made in the Senate to-dayto have adopted a resolution granting authority to erect on public landin Washington a joint memorial to the memory of Major ArchibaId W. Buttand F. D. Millet, the Washington artist, both of whom went down withthe Titanic.

Senator McCumber of North Dakota made objection and thequestion went over. Mr. McCumber based his objection on the ground thattoselect two of these victims from the entire number would be invidious.Hewanted further time to prepare an amendment. The proposed memorial is adrinking fountain. Friends of the two men have subscribed the money forits erection.
