Boys Were Lost
Mrs. Rosa Abbott, of Providence, wife of Stanton Abbott, the former lightweight champion of England, well known In this city, where he has refereed many boxing bouts, including those at the Yacht club smokers, and two sons, Rosmore and Eugene Abbott, were passengers on the ill-fated Titanic, the two boys perishing in the death plunge of the stricken steamship, while their mother was saved and reached New York on the Carpathia.
She was Immediately taken to the New York hospital where it was reported yesterday afternoon 'that she was resting comfortably.
According to her statement to the hospital officials Mrs. Abbott sank with the Titanic because she would not leave the boat, preferring to remain face death rather than leave her sons. She went down with the steamship, her sons clasped in her arms, but they were torn apart by the swirling waters and Mrs. Abbott came to the surface alone. The whirlpool caused by-the plunge of the liner into the ocean caught her and she went under a second time, but the second explosion on board the doomed ship forced her to the surface, where she was fortunate in encountering a life raft to which she clung for five hours before the rescue ship picked her up.
Upon arrival at the hospital in New York it was found that both her legs were frozen, the physicians at the hospital stating that her limbs looked as If they bad been badly burned.
Mrs. Abbott with her sons had been visiting her mother at St. Albanshurst, England.
Yesterday she was better, and asked that a telegram be sent to Rev. F. W. Crowder of Grace church in Providence, her pastor, telling him where she was and informing him of her condition.
As soon as this word was received Deaconess Von Brockdorff got into communication with the New York hospital. She found that the woman would soon be well enough to be moved and arranaged that when it was deemed feasible to so do the hospital authorities would notify her of the fact.
Mrs Abbott has ho Providence address, but-formerly lived at 1 Gould Place, off Broad street. She has supported herself and her sons by sewing.
The oldest boy was a member of the choir at Grace church and was about 19, while the other boy was some two years younger. Neither was brought in on the Carpathla and it is concluded they perished when the Titanic went down.
For several years Mr. and Mrs. Abbott lived in East Providence, Stanton Abbott is now located at 539 Washington street. In Providence, but could not he found last sight, and It was the general belief that had had gone to New York.
