STEAMSHIP OLYMPIC TO BE CONVERTED INTO CRUISER BY BRITISH GOVERNMENT

The Washington Herald

New York, Sept. 28---Local observers who have been watching the formation of
war clouds over Europe in the last few months were interested in an
announcement made to-day by officials of the White Star Line concerning the
Olympic, which leaves to-morrow for the last voyage of the year and will not
return to this port until next April.

By that time her appearance will have been altered greatly by a stay of six
months in the Belfast shipyards. The changes to be made were decided upon by
the line officials following a series of conferences with the British
admiralty authorities, and part of the expense of the alteration will be
borne by the British government.

One and a quarter millions of dollars will be spent by the line in
installing a secondary steel hull within the present hull. A cruiser's stern
will replace the present ocean greyhound stern, and for this the government
will pay.

Overhauling the boilers will give her greater speed capacity than any other
cruiser in the world---for cruiser she will be when the alterations are
completed.
