Guide to the Crew of Titanic: The Structure of Working Aboard the Legendary Liner

£9.51

Much has been written about Titanic, the British passenger liner that sank on her maiden voyage after a collision with an iceberg in 1912; however, until now little mention has been made about the intricate world of the ship’s complement, which comprised more than the total of third-class passengers alone.

Titanic researcher Günter Bäbler examines in detail the working structure of the crew, including the complex arrangement of the engineering department and information on tips, salaries and hidden bonuses, while each of the 899 crew members on board is mentioned.

This valuable study breathes life into the forgotten but significant story of the ship and its relationship to its crew, of whom over 75 per cent died when Titanic sank.

I came across a book called A Guide To The Crew of the Titanic by a Swiss man named Gunther Babler. The topic seems interesting but does anyone know if this book is any good?

PS: I know that there is a lot of information on ET about every crew member but there is something to be said about having similar info in a handy volume..... provided that it is well researched and written.

I got it as a present, and I would personally say it's a very good book. 🙂

  • Explains the duties, wages, timetable and uniform for the various members of the crew (Engineers, Victualling Crew, Trimmers, Officers etc).
  • Diagrams showing crew structure of the various groups (from Chief / Head to smallest crew
  • An entire crew list (in the back).
  • Lots of nice photos of public and crew spaces from Titanic, Olympic and other ships (including a restored version of Francis Browne's Marconi Room Photo).

The name of the author tells me it will be good. He has spent years on research. Some of his efforts are on this site.

Quite right, Dave. Gunter Babler is a well-known and highly-respected researcher of Titanic's people. His work is uniformly first-rate.

I know, strictly speaking, the band were considered second-class passengers, but are they mentioned in this book? I'd like to buy it, but I'd like to know ahead if they are in or not.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and learned a lot. I understand your original post is several years old, Arun, but I'd be interested in hearing your opinion if you care to share it.

A very good and informative piece of work but as it can be used as a research tool, I wish there was a traditional index of crew names.
