Description
Over the years many books have been written about the history of Birmingham. In all of them, attention is paid to the individuals who through their drive, enthusiasm, vision, and in some cases genius, led Birmingham to become, at the beginning of the 20™ century, the world’s leading and most diverse industrial city. The likes of Matthew Boulton, James Watt, William Murdoch, Thomas and William Avery, and Joseph Chamberlain, along with a dozen others rightfully hold their places as the leading figures in Birmingham’s history. There is however a name missing from the list of esteemed and recognized people, and it is not due to the
fault of local historians. It is in part the fault of the man himself and to the tragic circumstances of his untimely death. Birmingham’s forgotten son is William Edward Hipkins. — From the Foreword.
