Description
From the Preface
The disaster to befall the ship Titanic, which occurred on the night of Sunday, April 14-15, 1912 in the Atlantic Ocean, is by no means one of the few accidents and will take its place in the history of humanity next to such events as the earthquake in Italy in 1910, a volcanic eruption on the island of Martinique, a fire at a blouse factory in New York or, finally, a fire at the Iroquois Theater in Chicago. First of all, we must realize the fact that the ship Titanic was a veritable floating palace that could take on board as many passengers at once as many medium-sized towns had inhabitants. Titanic was the last expression of maritime construction art, both in terms of its colossal dimensions and in terms of facilities and comforts for passengers. The length of this giant was 882.6 feet, its greatest width was 92.6 feet, and the height of the entire structure was 175 feet. There were 2,223 passengers on this ship at the time of the disaster.
