Charles Dumigan

Titanic Delivery Crew

Mr Charles Dumigan (Delivery Crew) was born into a Roman Catholic family in Portaferry, Co Down, Ireland on 23 October 1866. He was the son of a mariner, William Dumigan, and the former Jane Watterson. He had at least three siblings, including William, Margaret and Edward.

Charles’ mother died in January 1872 but what became of his father is unknown.

Dumigan was married around 1894 to Margaret Convery (b. circa 1866); they had two children, William (b. March 1895) and Mary “Maggie” (b. November 1896). The 1901 and 1911 census returns shows the family living at New Row Street in Portaferry, Dumigan being described as a sailor on both records.

With his previous ship being Ailsa Craig, Dumigan served as an able seaman aboard the Titanic for that ship’s delivery trip from Belfast to Southampton before disembarking.

Charles Dumigan remained in Portaferry for the rest of his life; he died there on 22 August 1946, just shy of his 80th birthday.
