Mr John Gracey

Mr John Gracey was born in Belfast, Ireland around 1859.1

Coming from a Roman Catholic family, he was the son of Charles Gracey, a gardener.

Described as a sailor and resident of Halliday’s Road in Belfast, Gracey was married in St Brigid’s Church in that city on 30 July 1896 to Annie Ferguson who lived on the Lisburn Road. They had no children and by the time of the 1911 census both were residents of 5 Hamilton Place in south Belfast.

Gracey’s ship prior to Titanic had been the Valdure. He joined the Titanic at Belfast for the delivery trip to Southampton where he then disembarked.

John Gracey lived less than two years after working aboard Titanic; he died in a Sanitorium on Belfast’s Lisburn Road on 26 November 1913, reportedly aged 54.

Notes

  1. When he joined Titanic he gave his age as 41; both the 1901 and 1911 census records point to him being aged 51 in April 1912. When he died his age was given as 54 years.
