Mr Joseph MacIntosh 1 was born in Belfast, Ireland on 24 December 1851. Hailing from a Presbyterian family, he was the son of James MacIntosh, a fisherman.
MacIntosh joined the Royal Navy in December 1869 and served aboard a host of ships before he went ashore in January 1880. He was described as standing at 5’ 3¼” and having light hair, grey eyes, a fair complexion and having a scar above his right eye. After that he began working on merchant ships, usually those operating out of Liverpool.
Described as a sailor, MacIntosh was married in Belfast on 14 February 1879 to Isabella Irwin Logan (b. circa 1857). The couple had nine children, losing two in infancy: their eldest child Samuel arrived in 1879 and their youngest Mary in 1897.
The 1911 census shows Joseph and his family living at 3 Windsor Street in Belfast and he was described as a seaman.
MacIntosh’s ship prior to Titanic had been the Gem. He joined Titanic at Belfast for the delivery trip to Southampton where he then disembarked.
Joseph MacIntosh died in Belfast on 12 October 1938 2 and was buried in Belfast’s City Cemetery (plot N1 139).
