Mr Thomas Tinsley

Mr Thomas Tinsley was born at Railway Street in Lisburn, Co Down, Ireland on 25 December 1864.1 Hailing from a Church of Ireland family, he was the son of John Tinsley, a farmer, and Agnes Herald and came from a large family.

By 1901 he was an unmarried labourer living with his family at 32 Witham Street in east Belfast.

He was married in St Anne’s Church, Belfast on 20 May 1911 to widow Agnes Mills, née Kerr2; their address was listed as 49 Berlin Street, Belfast. A few months prior to that they appeared together on the 1911 census, described as a married couple with one child (who was not listed at the address). At that time Thomas was described as a shipyard worker.

He joined Titanic at Belfast for the delivery trip to Southampton where he then disembarked.

Thomas Tinsley died at 45 Fourth Street in Belfast on 12 June 1920 aged 55. He is buried in Dundonald Cemetery (plot B2 435).

Notes

  1. In 1912 he gave his age as 40; earlier census records show that he also downsized his age.
  2. Agnes’ first marriage was in 1896 to labourer Samuel Mills and they had several children together. What became of Samuel remains unclear.
