One of the most familiar and most photographed sections of the Titanic's wreck is deteriorating, according to new images.
An expedition to the wreck of the Titanic in August 2024 sought to image the debris field in high resolution in an effort to identify artefacts for possible recovery in future expeditions. In the same week it was reported that a legendary statuette (Diana of Versilles) which once graced the Titanic's First Class Lounge, had been located.
A secondary mission objective was to assess the condition of the Titanic wreck. In the process of photographing the iconic liner's bow, it was observed that a large section of railing on the port side of the vessel, close to the prow, had fallen away and now lies on the sea bed.
The railing is thought to have been relatively fragile as sections of it were removable to enable the manoeuvring of a spare anchor fixed to the forecastle deck and for hawsers to be attached to bollards and mounting points.
The railing will be familiar to filmgoers as being close to the section where Jack gives his "King of the World" proclamation and Rose's "I'm flying" scene.
