Most of the Finnish passengers on the Titanic left their home country aboard the steamer Polaris of the Finnish steamship company's (FÅA) on the Hangö-Copenhagen-Hull route. Polaris alternated with another ship, named Titania. Polaris was built by Gourley Brothers & Co. Dundee in 1899 and could carry 247 passengers, 80 in first and 167 in third class.

Polaris departed Hangö on 3 April 1912.
