Antti Wiljam Sihvola 1 was born in Ruotsinpyhtää in southern Finland around 1891. Little else is known about his background.
In Uusimaa on 30 March 1912, Sihvola obtained a passport to travel to the USA, intending to settle in Mountain Home, Idaho, where he had family, friends and a job awaiting him.2
Among the list of passengers aboard the Titanic was one, Andrew Sihvola, a young man of Finland, who was enroute to Mountain Home where he was to have received employment with Mr. A. Honga, an old friend of Mr. Sihvola’s father.” — Elmore County Republican, 4 May 1912
Antti Sihvola died in the sinking; his body, if recovered, was never identified.
A Matti Sihvola and his wife were the beneficiaries of £75 from the Mansion House Titanic relief fund. These may have been Antti Sihvola's parents, but this is not firmly established. £50 was also paid in compensation by the White Star Line.
- His name is frequently listed as “Antti Wilhelm Sivola”; the spelling “Antti Wiljam Sihvola” derives from his passport application. Contemporary Finnish newspapers confirm the spelling as Sihvola.
- “A. Honga” was Andrew Honga (1854-1917), originally of Ruotsinpyhtää, who had come to the USA in 1890 and settled with his family in Elmore County, Idaho, where he operated a sheep farm.
