Henry Ashburnham Bulley

Henry Ashburnham Bulley was born in Southampton, Hampshire, England on 24 October 1890. He was the son of William Frederick Bulley (1855-1920) and Annie Louisa Goater (1855-1903). His father was born in Pimlico, London and his mother was a native of Southampton, and they married in Southampton in 1881.

Henry had two known siblings: Lily Louisa (1886-1894) and William Frederick (b. 1888).

On the 1891 and 1901 censuses Henry and his family reside at 38 Brintons Road, St Mary, Southampton where his father is described as a master mariner. Henry's mother died 11 December 1903 and his father William was remarried the following year to Helen Elizabeth Naess, née Crew (b. 1845 in Southampton), a widow with several children.

On the 1911 census Henry is absent, most likely at sea, but his father is living with his stepmother at 20 Worthing Road, Portsmouth. His brother William Frederick, a ship's chandler, is listed as living at 42 Bugle Street, Southampton, the same address at the time of Titanic survivor Cecil William Fitzpatrick.

When Henry signed-on to the Titanic, on 4 April 1912, he gave his address as Carisbrooke House, Britannia Road, (Southampton). His last ship had been the Olympic. As a boots steward he received monthly wages of £3 15s.

Bulley died in the sinking. His body, if recovered, was never identified. His estate, valued at £50, 14s, was left to his brother William. The following death notice appeared in an unidentified newspaper  (30 April 1912):

BULLEY--April 15th, at sea, on the s.s. Titanic. Henry Ashburnham Bulley, youngest son of Captain W. F. Bulley, of Southampton, aged 21. Thy will be done.

Henry's father William later resettled in Southampton and died there on 23 March 1920. His brother William died in Winchester, Hampshire on 15 February 1962.

Henry is remembered on a memorial in St Augustine's Church, Southampton. He is also remembered on his parent's headstone in the Old Cemetery, The Common, Southampton:
