The Titanic left Southampton with 5892 tons of welsh coal supplied by the Lewis Merthyr Consolidated Collieries supplemented by coal from other White Star Line ships laid up by the coal strike.
Some of the coal, including this fragment, was salvaged from the wrecksite and broken up for sale.
