ii.British Census 1881: The crew sign-on sheets give his age as 39 and his birthplace as Hampshire. The only Thomas Knowles of appropriate age in Hampshire in 1881 was Thomas Knowles, aged 11, of 1 Goaters Alley, Holy Rood, Southampton. Living with his father Benjamin (a dock Labourer), mother Elizabeth and five siblings. If this is the correct person Knowles would have been 42 in 1912. - The Lymington Chronicle, 25 April 1912, p.5
