Mr Andrew Keane, known as Andy, was born in Toberroe, Greethill near Athenry in Co Galway1, Ireland on 7 February 1890.

He was the son of Patrick Keane (b. circa 1821), a farmer, and Honoria Kennedy (b. circa 1851) who had married in Loughrea, Co Galway on 22 September 1877.

His family were Roman Catholic and were fluent in both the Irish and English languages. His known siblings were: Ellie (b. circa 1878), Bridget (b. 18 February 1881), Margaret (b. 19 March 1883), Patrick (b. 19 October 1885), John (b. 9 June 1887), Michael (b. 27 September 1891), Mary Anne  (b. 26 September 1893), Martin (b. 12 December 1896), Nora (b. 8 June 1898) and Thomas (b. 14 August 1902).

He appears on the 1901 and 1911 censuses living at house 1 in Toberroe, being described on the latter as an unmarried labourer. His father had died aged 82 on 8 March 1903.

Away from the farm Andrew was also an athletic young man and heavily involved in Gaelic sports, particularly hurling and he helped carry his team—of which his brother Patrick was the captain—to the championship on several occasions. By early 1912, however, he had decided to join several siblings already in the USA.

Travelling with many items of Gaelic sporting ephemera, including camans (hurley sticks) and his sporting medals, alongside a melodeon (a type of accordion) for musical pursuits, Andy boarded the Titanic at Queenstown on 11 April 1912 as a third class passenger (ticket number 12460 which cost £7, 15s) and he was destined for Auburndale, Massachusetts. It was here that his sister Ellie and brother John lived and it was they who sent money for his passage. Whilst aboard he is believed to have been acquainted with Honor Healy who came from a neighbouring townland in Galway.

Andrew Keane died in the sinking and his body, if recovered, was never identified.

His widowed mother later benefitted from the American Red Cross and the Titanic Relief Fund. She remained in Ireland but within a few years after the loss of her son became afflicted with senility. She died on 14 August 1920.
