Le Journal de Genève

This letter was sent by "Mr. Wm J.M." to the Journal de Genève, Switzerland, and published on 25 April 1912:

It was with a deep sorrow that we learnt in Geneva that Mr. C. Duane Williams was amongst the victims of the Titanic.
Indeed, Mr. Williams only had friends in this city. He was a citizen of the great republic of North-America; he passionately loved Geneva, so much in fact that he came here for two days only and in fact spent nineteen years of his life. His frankness and warmth turned everyone around him into friends, and he was also a tactful and generous man to a rare level. He was a man who never was indifferent to anybody's trouble or misery. This is a detail that will tell you a lot about him: he complained that he did not pay enough taxes in a city where he felt at home.
His son was the nice tennis champion Richard N. Williams; Mr. Williams Sr. promoted this sport in this country, and no one can deny that it is thanks to him that tennis wonderfully spread in Geneva in the last years.
Those who had the privilege to know this man of good will never forget this nice character, his sparkling eyes full of bounty, the way this honest man frankly clutched your hands, the joyful "Hello my boys!" he welcomed us with. His death brings mourning to an ancient and respectable family from Philadelphia and, at the same time, to many members of the Geneva family. To Mrs. Williams, whose pain is only equal to her valour, to her son, miraculously saved from the disaster that made him an orphan, we send our moved sympathies and we tell them that the souvenirs we keep of the dear dead man will last forever.
