Frederick William Johnson was born in Seaforth, Lancashire, England on 9 June 1888 and baptised in St Peter’s Church on 18 July. He was the son of Robert Johnson, a mariner, and Mary Macker.

Between 1908 and 1910 Johnson worked as a cook aboard Saxonia; in April 1912 he was serving as a cook aboard the eastward-bound voyage of the Carpathia when that ship rescued the survivors of the Titanic

Frederick Johnson continued working at sea in later years; in 1918 he married Annie Brooks (b. 20 December 1899) and had several children although the marriage is believed to have disintegrated in the early 1930s, with Annie leaving with her two children, with newspapers appealing for her whereabouts.
